The Woodlands Partnership of Northwest Massachusetts has taken a significant step forward in its mission to promote forest stewardship and land conservation by expanding its membership to include representation of Indigenous Peoples. The Board of Directors voted unanimously at its annual meeting held on June 20, 2023, at Berkshire East Mountain Resort in Charlemont, MA, to add a new seat representing Indigenous perspectives through a local organization rather than specific tribal governments.

This move is seen as a crucial step towards building stronger relationships between the state and town forest management, land conservation, sustainable ecological practices, and accessibility with Indigenous communities. The Partnership has been working closely with Ohketeau Cultural Center, a local, multi-tribal organization based in Ashfield, MA, to increase Indigenous voices, perspectives, education, and inclusion.

Rhonda Anderson, Co-Founder and Co-Director of Ohketeau Cultural Center, will serve as the representative on the Partnership Board, bringing her extensive knowledge and experience as an Iñupiaq from Plainfield, MA. The Ohketeau Cultural Center has been instrumental in providing educational events related to Traditional Ecological Knowledge, cultural awareness, and forest stewardship, funded by grants received with regional partners.

The move follows a unanimous vote by the Partnership last October to change its operating name to the “Woodlands Partnership of Northwest Massachusetts” from the previous name that was included in the 2018 state law creating the public body. The Partnership has also requested state legislators and federal agencies to recognize the new operating name by changing it in the law.

In introducing the measure at the Board meeting, outgoing Chair Henry Art emphasized the importance of building relationships with Indigenous members of the community, stating that reciprocity between the state and town forest management, land conservation, sustainable ecological practices, and accessibility with Indigenous communities is essential. The vote was greeted with applause from those in attendance, marking a significant milestone for the Partnership.

With this new development, the Woodlands Partnership of Northwest Massachusetts takes a crucial step towards promoting greater inclusivity and representation on its Board, ensuring that the voices and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples are heard and valued.
